Updated September 2026 by Chris Penny, Sales Representative, Coldwell Banker Charles Marsh Real Estate. 700+ Greater Sudbury homes sold since 2008.

Capreol is a historic railway town at the northern edge of Greater Sudbury, about 40 kilometres north of the city core. It grew up around a Canadian Northern (later CN) divisional point and is still a stop on VIA Rail's transcontinental train, The Canadian. Housing is mostly mature single-family homes, many updated, on established streets, with some properties overlooking the water or backing onto greenbelt. Capreol has its own main street, arena, medical clinic and library, so most daily needs are within walking distance.
What kinds of homes are for sale in Capreol?
Capreol's housing is almost entirely mature single-family homes, from compact bungalows to larger family houses. Many have been updated with renovated kitchens and bathrooms, newer flooring, windows and decks. Larger backyards are common, and some homes have pools or sit near the water.
| Property type | What to expect | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Railway-era homes | Older houses near the original town core | Wiring, insulation, foundation, heating system |
| Updated family homes | Bungalows and two-storeys with renovated interiors and large yards | Permits for past renovations, roof and furnace age |
| Water and greenbelt lots | Homes overlooking the water or backing onto green space | Flood risk, shoreline rights, insurability |
What is Capreol's history?
Capreol was founded in 1911 around the Canadian Northern Railway's divisional point and incorporated as a town in 1918. It takes its name from Frederick Chase Capreol, promoter of the Northern Railway of Canada. The 1915 station still serves VIA Rail's The Canadian, and Capreol is the train's last stop in Greater Sudbury heading north and west.
The Northern Ontario Railroad Museum and Heritage Centre, in the former superintendent's house at 26 Bloor Street, draws about 13,000 visitors a year. Next door, Prescott Park displays CN steam locomotive 6077, a caboose and a rules instruction car.
What amenities does Capreol have?
Young Street is Capreol's main street, with a grocery store, pharmacy, hardware store and other local services. The Millennium Centre, in the former Capreol High School, houses a medical clinic, a fitness centre and a youth centre. The community arena and hall, and a library and Citizen Service Centre in the historic former Central Public School building, round out local services.
Hanmer's larger shopping is a short drive south.
What schools serve Capreol?
Elementary students attend C.R. Judd Public School, named after the first principal of Capreol's original Central Public School, and St. Mary Catholic Elementary School. Secondary students travel to Valley East.
What do most Capreol buyers miss?
- The railway is active. CN's mainline runs through town, so trains and crossings are part of daily life. Visit at different times and check how close a home is to the tracks.
- The commute is real. At about 40 kilometres from the city core, Capreol suits buyers who work locally, in Valley East, or remotely. Drive the route in winter before you commit.
- Older homes need thorough inspections. Budget for checks on wiring, insulation, foundations and heating.
- Waterfront and low-lying lots need extra diligence. Ask about flood history and insurance before you firm up.
