Early 1900s single-family home for sale in Copper Cliff, Greater Sudbury

Copper Cliff is a historic company town on the west side of Greater Sudbury, next to Vale's Copper Cliff smelter complex. Many of its homes were built in the early 1900s, from compact bungalows to large two-storey houses, with mid-century and 1980s homes filling in between. The Little Italy neighbourhood, with streets like Venice and Milan, is one of the oldest residential areas in the city. The famous Superstack, decommissioned in 2020, has been under demolition since June 2026.

What kinds of homes are for sale in Copper Cliff?

Almost all Copper Cliff housing is mature. The question for buyers is usually how much of the original character has been preserved and how much has been updated.

Property typeWhat to expectWhat to check
Early 1900s homes Period bungalows and two-storeys, some with original hardwood restored Wiring, plumbing, insulation, foundation, heritage features
Little Italy homes Character houses on narrow, winding streets Parking, lot size, proximity to the smelter complex
Mid-century to 1980s homes Bungalows and split-levels, often updated Roof, windows, furnace and electrical panel age

Common updates in Copper Cliff listings include new roofs and windows, newer or restored flooring, and renovated kitchens.

What is happening with the Superstack?

Vale decommissioned the 381-metre Superstack in 2020, after a roughly $1 billion emissions-reduction project made it obsolete. Two new, smaller stacks now handle the smelter. Demolition began on June 1, 2026, and by August the stack had already lost about 95 metres of height. Vale expects the full dismantling to take about five years.

Vale is managing dust with active and passive controls and using enclosures and blasting mats to reduce noise. Following a community vote with more than 5,000 responses, a monument was chosen to commemorate the stack.

What is Copper Cliff's history?

Copper Cliff grew up as a company town around the nickel and copper operations that later became Inco and then Vale. The Superstack, completed in 1972, was built to disperse emissions away from the community and was the world's tallest chimney until 1987.

Little Italy, in the northeast part of the community, was settled by Italian immigrants who came to work at the smelter. It's still home to the community's Italian Club. The Copper Cliff Museum, one of the Greater Sudbury Heritage Museums, preserves more of that history.

What amenities does Copper Cliff have?

Most day-to-day services are on Serpentine Street, including a post office, banking, a liquor store and a convenience store. Copper Cliff also has a dentist, an optometrist and a pharmacy.

For recreation, there's a large park with open green space and a baseball field, the Copper Cliff Curling Club and the McClelland squash and fitness centre. The community is next to Sudbury's West End and close to Lively.

What do most Copper Cliff buyers miss?

  • Century homes need specialist inspections. Budget for wiring, plumbing, insulation and foundation checks, and ask what has already been updated.
  • Proximity to the smelter varies by street. Visit at different times of day and consider how you feel about industrial activity nearby.
  • The demolition runs for years. If you're near the complex, factor in about five years of dismantling work.
  • Parking and lot sizes are tight in Little Italy. The narrow streets are part of the charm, but check parking and access for your household.
