Hanmer is a bilingual residential community in the Valley East district of Greater Sudbury, north of the city core. Homes range from established family subdivisions to newer builds and rural acreage properties. Hanmer is served by all four of Ontario's school systems: English public, English Catholic, French public and French Catholic. Where is Hanmer?
Hanmer is in Valley East, which takes its name from its location in the eastern half of the Sudbury Basin. Hanmer's neighbours are Val Caron and Val Thérèse, with Capreol further north.
Hanmer began as a farming township in 1904, settled for its sandy soil that fed Sudbury for decades. Valley East became a town in 1973 and joined Greater Sudbury in 2001. It remains strongly francophone, with nearly half the population historically French-speaking.

Kalmo Beach, on Whitson Lake in neighbouring Val Caron, is the closest supervised beach. Lifeguards are on duty daily in peak summer, and there is a boat ramp nearby. The City approved $463,000 in its 2026 budget for accessibility, circulation and lighting improvements at the beach.
Valley East Days is one of the largest free family festivals in Northern Ontario and draws thousands of visitors each summer.
What do most Hanmer buyers miss?
- Servicing differs street by street. Subdivision homes are typically on municipal services, while rural and acreage properties often rely on a well and septic. Confirm before you compare prices.
- Zoning matters for acreage plans. If you want a large shop, horses or chickens, check City of Greater Sudbury zoning for that specific lot before you firm up.
