Sudbury-events-for-August-2015-concertIt's still summer, and the community schedule is alive and well. August brings more interesting and fun events to Sudbury. We put together a list of just some of the activities happening in our city. You don't want to miss anything!

"Fiddler on the Roof"

August 6-9

The Sudbury Theatre Centre will present this classic story from Thursday through Sunday. Times are 8:00 pm Thursday through Saturday nights plus 2:00 pm matinees on Saturday and Sunday. This play won nine Tony Awards when it debuted in 1964 and addresses threats to a minority group which is an issue we still see in our current society. It is also includes humour and a glimpse of a significant historic era. Enjoy some local culture at 170 Shaughnessy Street in Sudbury.

Vale Summer Concert Series

August 12

Lucky Sudbury residents and visitors will get to see Ennis of Newfoundland on Wednesday, August 12, 7:00 - 8:30 pm. This trio performs folk and celtic music and are very good at it considering they won the 2013 Newfoundland Group and Album of the Year. They went on to win the ECMA in 2014 for the Traditional Album of the Year. After a world tour and gold record, they're coming to Sudbury for our listening pleasure.

This is a free, outdoor event right on the Lake Ramsay shore, a lovely place on a nice summer evening. The concert is in the Grace Hartman Amphitheatre, and what a great way to spend a night out. Along with this event, support of the Sudbury Food Bank, through monetary gifts of any amount, is appreciated. The free concert is a good way to bring people together for music and the health of the community.

August 19

Wednesday, 7:00 - 9:00 pm, the Sudbury Shutterbugs Photography Club will get together at the Parkside Centre Craft Room inside the YMCA building. Experience is not a concern, since they include enthusiasts of no experience to those with a great deal of photography knowledge. Professionals and amateurs alike attend the club meeting to share information and photographs. So come and enjoy the profession or hobby you love with others who share your passion for photos!

Summer Filmmaking & Musical Camps for Teens

August 10-21

This opportunity includes many aspects of filmmaking and musical production for teens who are interested in this part of the entertainment industry. Those interested in filmmaking will learn details of cinematography, camera angles, trick shots and the importance of roles on the set of a film shoot.

Musical production students will focus on singing, dancing and acting skills in the performance realm. These performers will act in the short film made by the film production students so everyone can see the culmination of their two-week long effort. Working 9:00 am - 4:00 pm daily, Monday through Friday both weeks, teens will get a close-up look at the mechanics of developing a film and a musical.

There is an actual premiere for the film, called "The Red Carpet Premiere," on Friday night, August 21, 8:00 pm. Imagine the feeling of showing off the final product after all of that hard work. It all happens at Verve Arts on 178 Elm Street in Sudbury. The cost of the workshop is $550.00 plus tax. Call 705-222-2787 or email them to register.

Check their website for more details teens need to know before going to the workshop. You get a copy of the film if you bring a memory stick, and that's a good deal. This kind of opportunity doesn't happen all that often.

Star Party

August 21

Aside from the local film "stars," there are other stars to observe, and they're in the sky. Science North, at 100 Ramsey Lake Road, is throwing a "Star Party" to look more closely at the shiny objects we see every night. The telescope shows much more, including a few planets and the moon. Big deal binoculars will also be available for sky viewing.

Viewers will also learn how to find a few constellations and hear about their connected mythologies. We do this outdoors, of course, in front of the little snowflake building if the weather cooperates. It all depends on Mother Nature. Say nice things to her about August 21st. Call Science North for more details.

Take advantage of the last full month of summer while you can. These events are great ways to celebrate summer in Sudbury. See you there.
